Spiritual Revival in Herher: Re-consecration of St. Gevorg Church

On October 18, the village of Herher in Vayots Dzor was filled with joy and reverence as the community gathered for the solemn re-consecration of St. Gevorg Church.

Տեղի ունեցավ Սուրբ Գևորգ եկեղեցու վերաօծման հանդիսավոր արարողությունը։ Having suffered extensive damage over the years, the church has now been fully restored, revived in both its architectural grandeur and spiritual significance.

The restoration was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Diocese of Vayots Dzor and the Community Development NGO, with generous support from the French association L’Œuvre d’Orient, individual benefactors, and local residents.

The project was part of the Renewed Spiritual Life and Church Revitalization program, which aims to revitalize Armenia’s spiritual and cultural heritage by restoring historic sanctuaries in rural communities.

The re-consecration ceremony brought together a distinguished group of guests, including L’Œuvre d’Orient representatives Luc and Blandine Boureau; Dominique Vaysse, Deputy Counsellor for Culture and Cooperation and Educational Attaché at the Embassy of France in Armenia; Dr. Markus Ritter, Head of the European Union Mission in Armenia; Member of the National Assembly, Sergey Bagratyan; Vayots Dzor Governor Vahagn Arsenyan; architect Levon Vasilyan; the restoration team; community leaders; clergy; and many others.

His Grace Archbishop Abraham Mkrtchyan, Primate of the Diocese of Vayots Dzor, presided over the ceremony. In his speech, he underscored the enduring friendship between Armenia and France and extended heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the church’s restoration.

Following the re-consecration, a baptism ceremony for children was held, marking a new chapter of faith for the younger generation. The day continued with the traditional matagh (oblation), initiated by Herher community leader Nairi Babayan as a gesture of thanksgiving and blessing.

The celebration culminated in the beloved Popok (walnut) Festival, a vibrant community tradition that added color and festivity to the spiritual occasion.

The re-consecration of St. Gevorg Church stands as a powerful moment of spiritual renewal for the village of Herher, a testament to the strength of faith, the power of cooperation, and the shared commitment to preserving Armenia’s rich cultural heritage.
